Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja are notable omissions, while Cameron Bancroft is a surprise inclusion in Australia's squad for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan.

Bancroft, Joe Burns and Travis Head have all been recalled, although the trio will have to battle it out for the two available batting positions.

Khawaja was dropped during the Ashes series and has had a poor Sheffield Shield season to date, while Harris has been axed despite being a member of Australia's most recent Test team.

Harris' 116 for Victoria in a high scoring match against South Australia wasn't enough to secure his spot, after he averaged just 9.67 in three Tests against England.

Bancroft was only a late inclusion in the Australia A team that played Pakistan earlier this week, added when Nic Maddinson was a late withdrawal. Bancroft then top scored with 49 in the home side's dismal first innings of 122.

"Cameron Bancroft's inclusion, we thought we needed a spare batsman in the squad, we know he can cover up the top of the order and also in the middle order, as we've seen in the recent Australia A game," said selector Trevor Hohns.

"He's an ideal person to have in our squad. He's got the ingredients of being a very good Test match player, he's a hard worker, he was left out in England after a couple of Test matches, but he's had the bit between his teeth.

"He's worked very hard on his game, and the improvement in his game is quite noticeable."

Victorian batsman Will Pucovski had been considered a likely selection, however he advised Cricket Australia that he didn't wish to be considered due to mental health issues. Hohns confirmed that Pucovski's request not to be considered came before the squad was picked, although he conceded the 21-year-old was close to selection.

Selectors have also named an extended bowling lineup, with the 'Big Five' of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon joined by Queensland's Michael Neser, who toured England without playing a Test.

Starc only played one Test in England, although 10 wickets for New South Wales against Tasmania, and another strong performance against Western Australia, make a strong case for his recall. At this stage Pattinson and Neser appear the two most likely to miss out.

Australian squad for Tests against Pakistan: Tim Paine (captain), David Warner, Joe Burns, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Matthew Wade, Cameron Bancroft, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson, Michael Neser.
