'I think it's fair': Paul Gallen concedes current Maroons are worst in history

Former NSW Origin captain Paul Gallen says the criticism that this year's Maroons squad is the worst in 40 years is "fair" as Queensland look to pull off an upset in Wednesday's Game Three decider.

With Queensland coach Wayne Bennett forced into selecting a host of fresh faces, many pundits have questioned just how elite this year's squad really is.

Bennett last week was forced to stick up for young playing group when he hit out at reporters for questioning his side's ability.

"Do they drug test journalists? I think they should if they're making that kind of stuff up," Bennett said.

Responding to the suggestion that this year's Queensland group is the worst in history, Gallen admitted the criticism was warranted.

"I look at the period I came through against Queensland. It was a great side full of future Immortals," Gallen told Sports Sunday.

"I look at the current side and they've got some great players, but I think as a team, when it comes down to ability, I don't think they've got anywhere near the ability of the Blues, so I think it's fair."

Gallen added that he expects the Blues to come out on top in next week's decider with New South Wales simply having more "ability" within the team.

"If this game comes down to effort, and the effort and enthusiasm is equal from both sides, it then comes down to ability," he added.

"I think the Blues have more ability in their side, I really do. Particularly in key positions. I think the halves cancel each other out because they're both very, very good.

"But I think the hooker for the Blues is far and away better than the Queenslanders. Fullback, James Tedesco, probably the best player in the game.

"I think in those key positions, the Blues will get them."
